Women Deliver: “Accelerating Action on the MDGs”

Women Deliver and Partners including AMREF plan to urge UN Delegates to accelerate action on the MDGs

Sunday, September 19th
9:30-11:30am
New York City, NY

Driving forward the momentum gathered from a successful second global conference, Women Deliver is organizing a side event, “Accelerating Action on the MDGs: Delivering for Girls, Women and Babies”, for delegates to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS). A day before the Special Session begins, UN member country delegates, NGOs, corporations, donors, UN agencies, youth leaders and media will gather in New York City to discuss progress made on the Millennium Development Goals as well as concrete steps to be taken.

Through featured speakers and round-table discussions, participants will focus on commitments to MDGs 5, 4 and 6; provide messages that can be incorporated in member country oral statements at the UNGASS; and promote networking and collaboration between governments, corporations, NGOS, and youth at the country level.

The key messages to be highlighted include:

• Women deliver enormous social and economic benefits to their families, communities, and nations.

• We have short-term and long-term cost effective solutions to help achieve the MDGs.

• Delivering these solutions requires country-level actions: political and financial.

• Synergistic benefits accrue to all MDGs when progress is made on MDGs 5, 4, and 6 [as well as 2 and 3].

• Delegates are encouraged to support and be part of the UN Secretary General’s Global Strategy on Women and Children’s Health.
