A History of Caring
AMREF was founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa by Michael Wood, Archibald McIndoe, and Tom Rees, who piloted their own planes and flew to the most remote communities of East Africa to bring essential health services. Since then, we have been creating simple and cost-effective health solutions that transform the lives of families and communities across Africa. Today, the African Medical & Research Foundation (AMREF) is the largest health development organization based in Africa and 97% of our staff is African.
AMREF's Mission
To empower the people of Africa, through better health, to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives.
