In 1957, three adventurous surgeons, among them the renowned American surgeon Dr. Tom Rees, started out with a single-engine plane and the inspired goal of bringing medical care to remote communities in Africa. They called themselves The Flying Doctors of East Africa. Over the past five decades, the “Flying Doctors” have grown into AMREF, the largest Africa-based health development organization.
Join us at this informal reception, where Dr. Asrat Mengiste, Head Surgeon of the AMREF Flying Doctors, visiting from Nairobi, will talk about today’s Flying Doctor’s program, the clinical outreach, and his work in the area of cleft lip and palate surgeries. Enjoy insights and stories about the “doctors with wings” work to provide surgical care and training across Africa.
Watch a video showing some of Dr Mengiste's outreach work.
AMREF is the largest health development organization based in Africa. We work to empower people, through better health, to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives.
