Healthy Girls and Women = Healthy Africa in New York City

Leading Public Health Advocates and Philanthropists Recommit to Health for Women and Girls in Africa

(New York, NY) – The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF USA) will be gathering more than 250 of the most powerful advocates and philanthropist leaders focused on African public health in New York City.

At a special luncheon dedicated to HEALTHY GIRLS +  WOMEN = HEALTHY AFRICA on April 14, 11:30 AM to 2 PM at the Plaza Hotel, leading change agents will not only debate steps to improve the health situation of African girls and women, but also recommit to urgently needed action.

Honorees and speakers include:

•    Jennifer Buffett, President of the NoVo Foundation

•    Ambassador Swanee Hunt, President of Hunt Alternatives Fund

•    Mary Robinson, President, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative and former President of Ireland

•    Miriam K. Were, M.D., Recipient, French Legion of Honor and Laureate, Noguchi Prize and former International Chair of AMREF

•    Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and authors of “Half the Sky”

•    Her Excellency Ida Odinga, wife of Kenya’s Prime Minister

•    Accenture

There will be a panel discussion and dialogue, moderated by:

•    Carol Jenkins, Event Chair, AMREF USA Board Member, and Founding President, The Women’s Media Center


Other featured guest on the program is:

•    Dr. Teguest Guerma, currently the Associate Director of HIV/AIDS for the World Health Organization (WHO) who will join AMREF as Director General in June
