AMREF USA Executive Director joins Advisory Council of Women for Water – Water for All campaign

The lack of safe water and sanitation is one of the world’s most serious development and public health challenges. Women and children are the most affected of all groups.

Nearly 1 billion people around the world lack access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. The crisis is worst in sub-Saharan Africa, where two in five people lack safe water. Across Africa, more than 700,000 children succumb per year to diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water.

As we celebrate World Water Day, we are pleased to announce that AMREF USA has joined the emerging Women for Water – Water for All campaign. This decade-long global campaign will provide holistic integration of leadership, resources, and solutions from the WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) and Women’s sectors to vastly increase access to clean water and sanitation globally.

Providing access to clean water and sanitation is an essential element of AMREF’s strategy to improve health and transform lives in Africa. We have a long history of working with communities across Africa to provide sustainable, safe water; built latrines; and teach personal hygiene and sanitation practices at schools.

Clean water and sanitation:

Women and children are disproportionately affected by the lack of safe water and sanitation.

  • Women and children walk on average 3.5 miles each day to get often untreated water. This commute - 15 hours per week - prevents them from attending class and/or pursuing income-producing activities.
  • Lack of adequate sanitation facilities at schools results in lower leves of attendance among girls, perpetuating cycles of gender inequality and poverty.
