David W. Furnas, MD
David W. Furnas, MD, Emeritus Chief of Plastic Surgery, University of California, Irvine. A pioneer in microsurgery, Dr. Furnas specialized in plastic surgery and microsurgery of the face, facial features and facial skeleton. He has shared his skills extensively in developing countries including a full year as surgeon for AMREF’s East Africa Flying Doctors Services, to which he returned annually to continue work in Kenya and Tanzania until 2000. Extensive media coverage of Dr. Furnas’ work includes articles on his efforts to help the victims of the embassy bombings in Nairobi in August 1998. He received the AMA Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the University of California, San Francisco Alumnus of the Year Award. He joined the AMREF USA board in 1987.
