ArtBall 2019

Honoring Zanele Muholi with the Rees Visionary Award

Honorary Host: Shantell Martin
Music: Rich Medina, Juls, and Tao
Art Curation: Alexandra Giniger and Atim Annette Oton
VIP Honoree Interview: Kimberly Drew

ArtBall is not a typical New York City charity gala. ArtBall is a celebration of African cultures - of African art, African music, and African healthcare solutions. It is a Contemporary African Art auction, an immersive learning experience, and a party.

ArtBall 2019 honored South African artist and LGBTQI+ visual activist Zanele Muholi with the Rees Visionary Award. Named for our late founder, surgeon and artist Dr. Tom Rees, the Rees Visionary Award is given to artists we feel are creating exceptional work that educates, inspires, and emboldens the viewer through these challenging times. Muholi’s work, which addresses issues of human rights, especially that of the LGBTQI+ community, is vital and powerful.

TICKET LEVELS:

  • VIP Reception: Includes an open bar, food, an intimate conversation between Kimberly Drew and Zanele Muholi, a walk-thru of the auction with Artsy and ArtBall Curators Alexandra Giniger and Atim Annette Oton,  artist meet and greets, and more to come! This also allows entrance into the general party.

  • General Party: Includes open bar, award ceremony, art auction, activations, and entertainment.

Dress Code: Dress to Impress!

About the Honoree

Zanele Muholi is a South African artist and visual activist. For over a decade Muholi has documented black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people’s lives in various townships in South Africa. Responding to the continuing discrimination and violence faced by the LGBTI community, in 2006 Muholi embarked on an ongoing project, Faces and Phases, in which they depict black lesbian and transgender individuals.

These arresting portraits are part of Muholi’s contribution towards a more democratic and representative South African homosexual history. Through this positive imagery, Muholi hopes to offset the stigma and negativity attached to queer identity in African society.
