Alternative Rites of Passage for young Maasai girls

This unique celebration of the Maasai, a nomadic tribe in East Africa, was recently captured by Dutch photographer Anja Ligtenberg.  The rites of passage to womanhood for young Maasai girls has traditionally been accompanied by female genital cutting (FGC). Amref Health Africa has helped to eliminate this harmful practice in many Maasai communities, replacing it with education about sexual and reproductive rights and the importance of staying in school for girls.
