We are thrilled to announce a new two-year global charity partnership with Allen & Overy (A&O). The USA component was launched at their New York offices on November 12, 2014. Originally launched in the UK in October earlier this year, Amref Health Africa was selected by Allen & Overy staff and partners in a worldwide vote throughout the firm’s 44 offices. We would like to thank everyone who voted for us, and who supported us along the way.
Allen & Overy will support Amref Health Africa’s work with 32,600 boys and girls in Meatu, one of the poorest regions of northern Tanzania. Pregnant girls are expelled from school in Tanzania, leaving them unable to complete their education. As a result, 5,000 girls a year are illegally denied their right to education. But by starting sex education in primary schools and working to influence cultural practices, young girls can avoid pregnancy and complete their education.
Amref Health Africa has already succeeded in reducing pregnancy rates among primary school girls in Southern Tanzania from 257 per year to 10 per year. Our sexual and reproductive health rights program helps youth aged 10-24 make informed decisions about their sexuality, HIV prevention, the harmful practice of female genital cutting and overall human rights. A&O will now work with Amref Health Africa to extend this by reaching thousands of boys and girls with essential sex education in a region of Tanzania where this information is needed the most.
Bob Kelty, Executive Director at Amref Health Africa in the USA, stated: “A&O is in a very strong position to help us prevent girls in Tanzania from being expelled from school if they become pregnant. The universal right to primary education is recognized in Tanzania, but thousands of girls each year are still denied access to education. We’re grateful to the staff at A&O worldwide who voted for us and gave us this opportunity to really expand a successful program. We’re thrilled to be A&O’s new global charity partner and we know with their support, we can make a big difference to these young girls’ and boys’ lives.”
Annelies Van Der Pauw, partner and co-head of corporate responsibility at Allen & Overy, says: “Our global charity partnership allows us to bring the skills and resources of the entire firm together to have a significant impact on one charity. Fundraising is a major element of this, but equally important is providing the professional skills of our people, both lawyers and support staff around the world. Amref Health Africa is an excellent charity and there’s a real sense of excitement here about what we can achieve with them.”
