Centers for Disease Control

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading United States government public health agency. Its main goal is to protect public health and safety of Americans through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability.

For decades, Amref Health Africa has worked in partnership with the CDC to strengthen health systems in African nations that are facing some of most devastating and costly infectious disease outbreaks including malaria, HIV/AIDS, and Ebola. Amref Health Africa is currently implementing a five-year project which is scaling up comprehensive HIV/STI prevention in seven districts in Uganda. A major focus of the project is safe male circumcision (SMC). By the end of year four nearly 228,000 SMCs had been performed.

Project in Focus – Strengthening Laboratory Systems in South Sudan

Amref Health Africa’s most recent partnership with the CDC is designed to assist the South Sudan Ministry of Health in strengthening their national laboratory system to support the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and surveillance of HIV through high-quality laboratory services. Amref Health Africa will also support development of a national blood transfusion service to provide a safe, reliable blood supply to meet essential needs.

As prioritized in the South Sudan National HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan 2013-2017, Amref Health Africa and project partners, including the CDC, Ministry of Health, and the Regional Society for Blood Transfusion in Kenya, will strengthen the National Public Health Laboratory to provide leadership for developing a national laboratory system and establishing a center of excellence to support clinical and public health testing needs in South Sudan, with a focus on HIV/AIDS.

We look forward to working with Amref Health Africa and partners to develop a national laboratory system, as well as an effective blood transfusion service.  We have collaborated with Amref Health Africa for many years in the training of health workers in South Sudan. Their expertise in strengthening laboratory services, their commitment to creating sustainable solutions, and leadership in African health makes them a partner second to none.”

Hon Dr. Riek GaiKok, Minister of Health, Republic of South Sudan
