Since 2013 Philips Healthcare and Amref Health Africa have been engaged in a strategic partnership designed to improve healthcare in Africa. Both partners bring their unique expertise and networks to the long-term partnership which aims to train African health professionals and to implement large-scale health programs on the African continent.

Project in Focus – Cairo to Cape Town Road Show

Each year since 2010 Philips has embarked on the “Cairo to Cape Town Road Show”, a yearly journey through the African continent which enables Philips to engage in dialogue with customers, governments, NGOs and media to develop a better understanding of each country’s unique requirements and to develop relevant technology to support their maternal and infant care needs. In 2014 when the road show visited Kenya, Philips unveiled its new ultra-mobile ultrasound system VISIQ. The size of a tablet, the VISIQ is the first ultra-mobile system from Philips. It provides high quality images for expectant mothers wherever care is taking place. By launching this new system in Kenya, Philips continued to demonstrate its dedicated support to the Kenyan Ministry of Health in its mission to reduce child mortality rates, improve maternal health, meet the UN Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5 and revitalize Kenya’s health infrastructure as part of Kenya’s Vision2030.

During the road show visit, Philips and Amref Health Africa organized a maternity screening camp at the Amref  Health Africa supported clinic in Kibera; the largest informal settlement in Nairobi. For a majority of the expectant mothers this screening camp was their first ever opportunity to have a scan. Philips provided ultrasound equipment, including the VISIQ system and clinical specialists for the camp. During the clinic 102 pregnant were given free ultrasound scans. Three pregnancy related complications were detected and, through its program with the local public hospitals, Amref Health Africa referred these women to the hospital where they received appropriate antenatal care.

“By teaming up with Amref, an internationally respected healthcare organization, we are convinced that we can work towards our goals of making a significant contribution to improving healthcare in Africa, expanding our activities for providing clinical and technical training to people, and growing Philips as an organization on the African continent.”

Peter van de Ven, Vice-President and General Manager of Philips Healthcare Africa
